Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Fassbinder, 1974)

Fassbinder was just the sort of self-destructive, intensley-driven, slob/genius that makes warblers giddy with adoration. The workhorse made 43 films in only 13 years before dying at age 37. Ali is one of his most powerful and accessible films, an astonishingly acted, melodramtic narrative of the romance between a 60 year-old German widow and her late-30 year old Moroccan lover. The ending is abrupt and heartbreaking, a characteristic of Fassbinder films. We like to think that he ends many of his movies quickly because he had to squeeze in a heroic Bitburger and bockwurst bender before starting up that third film of the year.
