Wirds of Denver: The Denver Egotist

We recently received a nice compliment from the dudes over at The Denver Egotist: “Can’t quite figure you guys out, but that’s what we like about you.”

We are pleased that our piecemeal nature was construed as mystery (we can’t figure out what we’re doing either), but there was also a twinge of irony to the nicety because we don’t fully understand The Egotist.

We get that they are a design blog and that they are attempting to help Denver suck less, but beyond that murky quest, what is their true raison d’être? To find out, we first surveyed some design-loving warbros who are Egotist devotees.

One described the site as, “a bitch fest, where people just complain about Denver.” Another said, “It started out as a blog where dudes slammed local ad work but has become a hub for the Denver advertising/design scene. And they have a pretty healthy job board going.”

We like that Denver has someone keeping an eye on the design world both within and outside our city walls and wanted to know more, so we went straight to the source.

Do you really think Denver sucks?

When compared to its potential, yes.

If you could change one thing about Denver it would be…

On the coast of Southern California.

Do you really think the answer lies in “challenging one another and holding each other” [we do]?

If we’re holding each other in some kind of powerful necklock, the statement is definitely one to live and work by.

Do you get tired of taking Interweb’s pulse every, single day?

It could be worse, the Internet could be something other than the world’s best source for entertainment and information. We would have given up long ago if we had to trawl transcripts from The View or personal ads in Westword all day long.

How much of your work is done from the comfy confines of lightly-soiled underwear—and nothing else?

Considering that the majority of our staff consists of under-aged children who can spot good advertising and type like the wind, next to none.

If you could inject Denver with a strand of je ne sais quoi from any international city, which one would you pick and why?

We recently read that New York City is comprised of something like 60-percent non-locals who moved there within the last 10 years. These are people who are deliberately moving to N.Y.C., which means they’re willingly putting up with all the crap of the city in exchange for its advantages, like museums, restaurants, professional opportunities, culture, etc. In a sense, you can interpret this as 60-percent of the people in New York City are there to kick ass in one way or another. This kind of attitude is invaluable for the creative industry. It’s no wonder you go to that city and there’s something interesting going on around every corner. This desire to be the center of everything and at that center of everything is severely lacking from the laid-back attitude of Denver, and it shows in the creative community’s lack of leadership and innovation.

How serious are you about your anonymity?

Not terribly. We just feel it helps keep the conversation remain on-point. We don’t want to distract from the site’s purpose by throwing in additional variables.

(gotcha!)

Which bird is the biggest egotist and why?

The middle finger for reasons that should be obvious.
