Wirds of Denver: The Himalayan News
Denver’s Breast Newspaper Headlines
In the matter of enticing readers to spend time with a story, the most crucial factor is the headline. It’s the story’s first, and usually only, impression in an world jam packed with time consuming content.
The Himalayan News is a Denver-based monthly newspaper focused on news from Indian, Nepal and the surrounding areas. The editorial staff at the Himalayan News has a firm grasp on the art of attention grabbing headlines. Here’s an impressive selection from the April 2008 edition followed by a short interview with the publisher/editor Mohan Ashtakala:
Romance and the Indian woman
Human benefit from fly’s tiny brain
MEDICAL NOTES: Ginger up
Fasting Is A Way Of Knowing Your Body
Three cheers for Tata
Massive hunt for ‘the God Particle’
The top five April Fools’ Day hoaxes of all time
A Donkey’s Suicide
Japanese dog who prays at the altar
NATURE: What are they wearing
The scope is incredible. There isn’t another publication in Denver that can manage 4 ridiculous animal headlines, a boob reference, and such a brazen statement about hoaxes all in one issue.
So Mohan, How long have you published/edited The Himalyan News?
It has been 10 and a half years.
Prior to this, did you experience a lack of Indian-related news outlets within the Denver area?
Yes. Mine is the first South Asian publication here in Denver. We used to have a radio program, but that died out a long time back.
The Indian Subcontinent provides suitable living conditions for more than 2,400 species of birds. Do you have a favorite bird and can you tell us anything about the birds of the region?
Mine would be the peacock. It is found throughout India, but esp. in the northern part of the country. Unfortunately, due to the cutting of old growth forest, the peacock in the wild is not in good shape.
Do you know of any bird that might have summited Everest or K2
I am not a bird expert, but there is a type of Tibetan Goose that summers in the high plateaus of Tibet, and in the winter, flies down to the Indian subcontinent. It is supposed to have flown over Mt. Everest.
The Himalayan News is found for free in South Asian related shops and restaurants all over Denver. We found a copy at the Little India on 15th and Champa.
